Restorations · Saving a damaged tooth
Treat the inside of the tooth, then protect the structure that remains.
Root canal therapy removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth so it can be sealed and restored rather than extracted when the prognosis is favorable.
Root canal treatment and the final restoration are two parts of one plan.
Deep decay, a crack, repeated treatment, or an injury can inflame or infect the pulp inside a tooth. Root canal treatment cleans and shapes the canal system, then fills and seals the space. The tooth continues to receive nourishment from the tissues around its root.
After endodontic treatment, the opening and lost tooth structure must be restored. Back teeth often need a crown because chewing forces and earlier damage leave them more vulnerable to fracture. Eastland’s CEREC system can provide many eligible crowns in a single visit.
What the procedure generally involves
- Examination and diagnostic imaging of the tooth and surrounding structures
- Local anesthetic and placement of a dental dam
- Removal of inflamed or infected pulp and cleaning of the canals
- Filling and sealing the canal system
- Placement of a temporary or final filling, followed by the appropriate definitive restoration
General dentist or endodontist?
General dentists perform many root canals. An endodontist is a dental specialist with advanced training in diagnosing tooth pain and treating the inside of teeth. Complex anatomy, retreatment, difficult diagnosis, or a surgical need may lead to referral.
Eastland Family Dental provides general dental care and coordinates specialist treatment when appropriate. Your evaluation should include whether treatment can be completed in the office or is better handled by an endodontist.
Three things to remember
Diagnosis comes before treatment because tooth pain has many causes
A dental dam keeps the treatment area isolated
The final restoration should be completed promptly
