A dental implant is a biocompatible post surgically placed in the jaw. An abutment connects it to the visible restoration—a crown for one tooth, a bridge for several teeth, or a denture for a larger span.

Eastland Family Dental lists implant planning, placement, and implant-supported restorations. CBCT imaging can provide three-dimensional information about bone volume and nearby structures. More complex surgical needs may be coordinated with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or another specialist.

Planning before placement

• Review of medical history, medications, tobacco use, and healing risks
• Examination of the gums, bite, available space, and condition of nearby teeth
• Imaging to assess bone and identify important anatomical structures
• Discussion of grafting, extraction, temporary teeth, and specialist coordination when needed

From implant to final tooth

The implant is placed in the planned position and allowed to heal according to the clinical situation. Bone integrates around the implant over time. Some patients receive a temporary restoration during healing, while others leave the implant unloaded.

After the implant is ready, a scan or impression is used to make the final crown, bridge, or denture. Implant restorations cannot develop cavities, but the surrounding gums and bone can become diseased. Daily cleaning and professional maintenance remain essential.
