The right denture depends on the teeth that remain and the support available.

A complete denture replaces all teeth in an upper or lower arch. A partial denture fits around remaining teeth and may use clasps or other attachments for support. Implant-supported options can add retention and stability when the mouth and health history are suitable.

An immediate denture can be made before remaining teeth are removed so a patient does not leave without teeth. Because the gums and bone change during healing, immediate dentures commonly need adjustments, relining, or replacement after the tissues stabilize.

Planning and follow-up

The process begins with an examination of the teeth, gums, jaws, bite, and treatment goals. Extractions, gum treatment, grafting, or implant care may be needed before the final appliance is made. Digital impressions or traditional impressions record the mouth for the dental laboratory.

After delivery, follow-up visits allow the team to adjust pressure spots, assess speech and chewing, and confirm the fit. Do not reshape or repair a denture at home; household glues and do-it-yourself kits can damage both the appliance and oral tissues.

Daily denture care

• Rinse away loose debris and brush the appliance with a soft denture brush and nonabrasive denture cleanser.
• Do not use regular toothpaste on removable dentures because it can be too abrasive.
• Remove the appliance for the period recommended by your dentist, usually including sleep, and store it as directed so it does not dry out or warp.
• Brush the gums, tongue, palate, and any remaining natural teeth every day.
