Crowns and bridges solve different restorative problems.
A crown covers a tooth to restore shape, strength, or appearance. It may be recommended for a tooth with a large filling, fracture, significant wear, root canal treatment, or another condition that leaves the remaining structure vulnerable.
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with artificial teeth connected to supporting teeth or implants. The design depends on the location of the gap, health of the supporting structures, bite forces, and whether an implant-supported option is appropriate.
Materials and fabrication
Restorations can be made from ceramic, metal alloys, or combinations selected for strength, appearance, tooth position, and bite. Shade and shape are planned to coordinate with the surrounding smile when tooth-colored material is used.
Eastland Family Dental uses CEREC technology to design and mill many ceramic crowns in one visit. Bridges and cases that need a different material or laboratory technique are produced with a trusted dental lab after a digital scan or impression.
What placement involves
For a tooth-supported restoration, the supporting tooth or teeth are prepared and recorded with a scan or impression. A temporary may be placed when a laboratory makes the final restoration. At the delivery visit, the dentist checks fit, contacts, appearance, and bite before cementing it.
Brush with fluoride toothpaste and clean carefully at the crown edges and beneath a bridge. Tell the office about looseness, a changed bite, new sensitivity, or difficulty cleaning the area.
